ESL Lesson Plan Conversation I

Class level: intermediate to advanced intermediate

Total Lesson length: approx. 1 hour to 1 ¼ hour

 

Lesson Type & Subject:  Listening for details and speaking accurately

Materials Needed: Public bus transportation maps/schedule (one for each pair)

Lesson Objective: Students be able to discuss travel and get bus directions.

Students use vocabulary and structure of direction sentences.

 

Assumptions:   Students are proficient in imperative and future tenses

Anticipated Problems & Solutions:  Function for how directions are normally given.

Solutions:  Have lists of travel phrases and phrases for giving/receiving directions at hand

 

Vocabulary sheet distribution/instructions:

Purpose of Procedure: To pre-teach vocabulary for giving and receiving directions.  Write difficult words on the board and pronounce them.

 

Strategy 1:

Group formation and instructions:

Purpose of Procedure:  To divide into groups.  Distribute maps.

Anticipated Problems & Solutions:  Distribution of maps may be disruptive

Solution: Distribute maps only after broken into groups to make sure students maintain focus for instructions.

Purpose of Procedure:   Students use vocabulary and phrases to discuss travel plans.

 

Students are given list of CCQs to ask each other:  Where on the map would you like to go?  Why would you want to go there?  What do you want to do there?  What’s involved preparing to go?  What problems might you have getting there?  What problems might you have when you get there?  Why do did you choose to go there over another place?  Who are you going with?  Why are you bringing them?

Students switch and the other partner discusses their travel plans

Strategy 2:

Purpose of Procedure:   Students use vocabulary and phrases to ask which route to take to get to a location.

Teacher gives  CCQs for students to ask each other:

How long will it take you to get there and why?  How much is the bus fare?  How do you plan on paying?  What will you do while you’re waiting for the bus?  How many buses do you need to take?  How will you find the information to get to your destination?  How will you get back?

Students switch and the other partner discusses their travel plans

Purpose of Procedure:   Students use vocabulary and phrases to ask which route to take to get to a location.

Purpose of Procedure:   Clarification of questions students might have had during the exercise.

Anticipated Problems & Solutions:  Chance of high TTT.  Need to answer question and ask CCQ to elicit from other students to apply the material.
